GRIZZLY MAN

Here is an unusual documentary about grizzly bears in Katmai National Park, Alaska and Timothy Treadwell, an actor turned animal activist who spent 13 summers in the park, filming and protecting the bears. The legendary writer/director, Werner Herzog, has shaped Treadwell’s videotapes and interviews into a deeply engrossing trip not so much into the world of grizzly bears, as into the psyche of Treadwell, who lost his life to the bears he so loved when he and his girlfriend were mauled and eaten in 2003.

This is a mesmerizing work of disturbing power and unease, a study of a man teetering between omnipotence and insanity, carefully observed by Herzog and narrated in his hypnotically mild German accent. In the end the film seems to point out that the barriers between man and beast cannot be breached and, that perhaps nature should always be respected as an arena of “chaos and murder.”
